Badal Umrah Guide: How to Perform Umrah on Behalf of a Loved One

One of the most beautiful aspects of Islam is the ability to extend blessings and spiritual rewards to our loved ones, even after they have passed away or when they are physically unable to travel. This act of performing Umrah on behalf of another person is known as Badal Umrah (or Proxy Umrah).

If you have a parent, relative, or friend who is either deceased or permanently incapacitated by illness or old age, you can gift them the immense reward of an Umrah.

Key Conditions for Badal Umrah: Before booking or performing a Badal Umrah, it is essential to understand the core Islamic guidelines:

  • The Performer Must Have Done Their Own Umrah First: You cannot perform Umrah on behalf of someone else unless you have already completed Umrah for yourself at least once in your life.
  • The Beneficiary Must Be Unable to Do It: The person you are performing it for must either be deceased, terminally ill, or physically unable to make the journey ever again. You cannot perform Badal Umrah for a healthy person.
  • One Umrah per Intent: One Ihram/Umrah can only be dedicated to one specific person at a time.

The Rewards of Badal Umrah: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) validated this act when a woman asked if she could perform Hajj/Umrah for her frail father, replying, “Perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father.” (Abu Dawud). By doing this, you are fulfilling a spiritual debt for your loved one, and Allah, in His infinite mercy, rewards both the recipient and the person performing the act.
